Most people like you are just starting out in Gracie Jiu Jitsu, or in a lot of cases haven’t even started yet. Maybe you have never heard of it and you just discovered an academy in your town. Maybe you have heard of it but couldn’t find a school until now? Whatever the reason is that you are just starting or haven’t started yet, we are going to tell you exactly how to start your first day and turn yourself into an advanced Gracie Jiu Jitsu student.

First class down, on to day two
Ok, so it might take longer than one day, but in just a few short weeks you will get the hang of things. In every class we do a quick warm up to get the blood flowing and loosen up those joints and muscles. After the warm up we will jump into the lesson plan for the day. You will learn two or three techniques per lesson then practice those techniques with a partner. At the end of the lesson plan we offer some optional sparring to further expand your training. The sparring is completely optional and is best utilized when each student is personally ready. We will help you out with that!
Now you have the class structure down and it just flows like clockwork. Let’s take that training to the next level!
By now you have been training for a few months and its feeling good. Things are really starting to come together and you are seeing some real progress. When you feel this comfortable it’s easy to push your training a bit harder. Not too hard though, you are just a few months in remember? Let’s see what happens when you start to earn your belt promotions
Blue belts, purple belts, brown belts…. What do they mean?
Now that you have been training for a good period of time, you have been earning some stripes on your belt and you are confident that your instructor sees your progress. The ranking system in Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a good one. You should be about ready for your first belt color promotion after you receive four stripes on your white belt. Blue belt, I remember how I thought the people wearing blue belts were so amazing and I looked up to them. It was true! It’s your first milestone and it means a lot. In most Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools the blue belt indicates the ability to effectively defend yourself. This is also true here at Reflex Jiu Jitsu.

Moving through all the ranks
After your four stripes on each belt you advance to another colored belt promotion. This is hard work and takes a decent amount of time. But each level you will advance through will take the same hard work and persistence that it took to get your blue belt. Just listen to your instructor, have a good time, and enjoy the rewards. Eventually you will reach that high held goal of black belt. Reflex Jiu Jitsu will be right by your side the whole time watching and helping you grow.
